Kyiv City State Administration Brings Express Mode for Apple Pay to Kyiv Municipal Buses

Kyiv City State Administration today has enabled a safe, secure and private way for customers to pay and ride municipal buses in Kyiv by simply holding their iPhone or Apple Watch near a bus reader. Those with a compatible iPhones or Apple Watch will also be able to enable Express Mode, which allows Kyiv transit riders to simply tap and ride — with no need to unlock or even wake up their device.

"Express Mode brings a safe, secure and convenient way for our transit riders to pay and get to their next destination — making their commute easier and faster with just a quick tap of their Apple device. We continue to work to make Kyiv more comfortable and convenient for our residents," stated Petro Olenych, Head of Kyiv's Digital Transformation and Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration.

To get started, users will need to add an eligible credit or debit card to Apple Wallet. From there, they can enable Express Mode through the following steps:

  • Open the Wallet app on iPhone and select a card.
  • Tap the More button (…), then tap Card Details.
  • Tap Express Transit Settings.
  • Select your preferred credit or debit card.

For even more convenience once Express Mode is enabled, if an iPhone needs to be charged, customers can still use the device to pay to ride transit for up to five hours with Power Reserve.

"I am proud that even in these difficult times, we do not stop and continue to help the country and its capital to move towards digitalization, building a convenient, urban environment where all payments are made seamlessly, securely and hassle-free," commented Vira Platonova, Visa Senior Vice President, Group Country Manager, CISSEE.

Riding transit with Apple Pay takes full advantage of the privacy and security built into iPhone and Apple Watch. When a credit or debit card is added to Apple Wallet, it is never shared with Apple or stored on Apple servers. If an iPhone or Apple Watch is misplaced, the owner of the device can promptly use the Find My app to lock the device and help locate it.
