Latvia boosts Ukraine's energy restoration with Riga HPP transformer and more equipment

Latvenergo, a joint-stock company, delivered a package of equipment to support the reconstruction of Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

The aid package consisted of:
- a high-voltage transformer TS–250000/330 with a capacity of 250 MVA, which had previously been used at the Riga HPP;
- a compressed air compressor GR110;
- and 60 tons of transformer oil.
The Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service helped deliver oversized cargo to its destination.

The European Union covers transport costs.
"By providing a high-voltage transformer, oil, and a compressor, we can offer assistance to the people of Ukraine on a household level and also support the water and heat supply of hospitals, schools, and other important facilities. Let us stay united until Ukraine wins," said Arnis Kurgs, administrative director of AS. Latvenergo.

From the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian troops have been targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure. However, in the spring of 2024, they specifically focused on decommissioning sizeable thermal power plants. On March 22, the Burshtyn and Ladyzhyn thermal power plants were both damaged by attacks.
In addition, on March 29, during another shelling, three thermal power plants in Ukraine were attacked at once. In particular, the energy sector was damaged.
Two weeks later, on April 11, a massive attack on Ukraine resulted in the complete destruction of the Trypillia Thermal Power Plant in the Kyiv region. This plant provided electricity to three regions – Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr.
