New strategic concept: NATO leaders call russia the most serious threat to Alliance security

NATO summit in Madrid on Wednesday (June 29) approved a new strategic concept for the North Atlantic Alliance

It was reported by the NATO press service.

According to the new strategic concept, russia was identified as "the most serious and direct threat" to the security of the allies.

"The russian federation is the most serious and immediate threat to the security of the Allies, as well as to peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area," the text of the adopted concept reads.

It sets out NATO's strategy for the next decade.

At the same time, the Alliance emphasizes that it does not seek confrontation with russia and does not pose a threat to russia.

The concept does not specify whether the Alliance considers russia an enemy or an adversary but is ready for aggression on its part.

"No one should doubt our strength and determination to defend every inch of Allied territory, protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Allies, and defeat any aggressor," the document said.

The current decision reflects a sharp change in the security situation in Europe due to the war in Ukraine.

In the previous concept adopted in 2010, NATO identified russia as its strategic partner.

The current decision notes that russia seeks to establish spheres of influence and direct control through coercion, subversion, and annexation.

"It uses conventional, cyber, and hybrid means against our partners and us. Its aggressive military stance and rhetoric, as well as its proven willingness to use force to achieve its political goals, undermine the rules-based international order," the leaders added.

As reported by Rubryka, earlier on Thursday, US President Joe Biden announced a significant increase in the US presence in Europe in connection with the russian threat.

It should be noted that in his address to the NATO summit in Madrid, President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the Allies to help stop russia's terror against peaceful Ukrainian cities.

It should be recalled noted the NATO summit in Madrid is taking place on June 29-30.

As reported by Rubyka, on June 29, the British Foreign Secretary said that negotiations with russia were possible only after its defeat in Ukraine.

"We need to ensure russia's defeat in Ukraine. It is necessary for European security, freedom, and democracy. It is the only way to achieve lasting peace in Europe," Liz Trass said.
