To support education in the Mykolaiv region, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) provided over 1,500 laptops to local communities.

The Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration announced this on Facebook.

What is the problem?

Currently, approximately 2 million children are still participating in online or mixed learning. Out of this group, 327,000 students either skip classes or do not attend at all due to a lack of access to technology devices.

Children should always have access to laptops or tablets. Sometimes, students have to borrow their parents' phones to attend class.

What is the solution?

Therefore, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) provided more than 1,500 laptops to the communities of the Mykolaiv region to ensure the educational process.

"UNICEF distributed 1,513 laptops to 23 communities in the Mykolaiv region to support the education system. Additionally, community representatives discussed issues with access to high-quality education with UNICEF staff," the message reads.

How does it work?

It is noted that the head of the UNICEF Representation in Ukraine, Munir Mammadzade, assured that the fund strives to continue comprehensively helping the region recover.

"We understand that the war has seriously affected people, so we want to continue doing everything we can to help them return to normal life," he said.

For his part, the head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Vitaly Kim, emphasized that the organization of full-time education and activities for schoolchildren is a priority direction:

"We must do everything we can to give our children the opportunity to learn, even in such difficult conditions. Full-time education is not only about lessons but also about children being able to live a normal life, communicate with peers, and be safe."

The representatives of the regional military administration added:

"In the Mykolaiv region, the United Nations Children's Fund has already renovated six shelters and provided 835 laptops to teachers, along with over 5,340 laptops and 630 tablets to students."

Earlier, Vitaly Kim stated that international partners have directed hundreds of millions of dollars of humanitarian aid to support the Mykolaiv region since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia.

In January 2024, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, and the Olena Zelenska Foundation initiated the launch of the Device Coalition — a union of organizations, businesses, governments, and patrons that provides devices for Ukrainian students and teachers who are forced to carry out the educational process online. Its goal is to mobilize partners to meet the need for learning devices and provide students and teachers equal access to the educational process in the communities most affected by the war.

Within the Device Coalition, an agreement has already been reached on transferring more than 50,000 laptops and tablets, which will be delivered over the next few months. The implementing partners of the Device Coalition are UNICEF, UNESCO, and Theirworld Foundation/Global Business Coalition to Support Education.

It should be noted that thanks to the charitable initiative of international funds and Ukrainian partners, 5,000 Ukrainian schoolchildren received tablets for learning.

As previously reported, the UNICEF fund donated over 1,500 Chromebooks and tablets to students from the most vulnerable categories in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

It was also reported that over the past year, about 30,000 laptops were delivered to the regions of Ukraine out of the planned 50,000.
