On the morning of January 21, explosions rang out in Donetsk, targeting a local market, which killed 18 people.

Kremlin-controlled authorities blame Ukrainian forces for the shelling, soon updating the casualties number to 25.

The so-called head of the occupied Donetsk claims that the market was attacked on Sunday when it was crowded.

Initially, 13 dead and 10 wounded were reported.

Petro Andriushchenko, an advisor to the Ukrainian mayor of Mariupol, says that Russian troops continue to fire from residential areas, using civilians as a shield.

Russian authorities do not activate air raid warning signals in Donetsk.

Ukrainian government and military have not yet commented on the Russian accusations. However, there have already been cases when Russia has shelled Donetsk on their own to provoke Ukraine's side.

The occupied Donetsk is often under fire, but Russian forces attack the city themselves.

On September 1, 2023, more than 10 people were injured and a 6-year-old girl was killed in an attack.
