Ukraine to ramp up production of electronic warfare systems to withstand drone attacks

Ukraine's government shortened the terms for receiving electronic warfare equipment.

Approval for use will be based on a joint departmental test report or upon the examination of specified tactical and technical characteristics, the defense ministry says.

What is the problem?

The process of approval for operation included studying technical documentation, conducting tests, determining and obtaining the need from Ukrainian forces.

The military has been waiting for the much-needed electronic warfare equipment for months. This is unacceptable given that enemy drones have become a powerful weapon on the battlefield.

What is the solution?

In March, Ukrainian government adopted a resolution on drones to expand the market tenfold. The military now receives many locally produced drones.

Now we are transferring this experience to electronic warfare, the Vice Prime Minister said.

How does it work?

This solution will help manufacturers to develop more actively, reinvest profits, and not to spend a lot of time on bureaucracy.

The defense ministry emphasized that from now on, drones and electronic warfare equipment will operate on the basis of a joint departmental test report or based on the results of studying the declared tactical and technical characteristics.

The following changes will allow:

  • procure electronic warfare equipment in accordance with a simplified process;
  • increase the manufacturers' profit by 25%;
  • allow for equipment to be used without a second round of tests or a meeting of the Defence Ministry commission;
  • reduce the time it takes to approve UAV and electronic warfare systems for use to 10 days;
  • procure electronic warfare systems for the Defence Ministry and the State Special Communications Service at the request of the Defence Forces;
  • procure UAVs and electronic warfare systems before the completion of the procedure for approval for use following a positive joint departmental test report, or the availability of a NATO stock number;
  • eliminate the need for the General Staff to approve technical specifications for UAV and electronic warfare systems samples.
