Hyundai will help rebuild Boryspil Airport near Kyiv

Boryspil International Airport signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the well-known Korean company Hyundai Engineering.

This was announced on the airport's Facebook page.

What is the problem?

The airspace of Ukraine is closed for civil traffic from 2:45 Kyiv time on February 24, 2022, when Russia started its full-fledged invasion. Since then, the Boryspil airport has stopped its work.

Earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that, at the moment, the airport looks more like a set from a movie about Chornobyl because of Russian airstrikes and shelling. However, the ministry assured that after the end of the war, the airport would resume its work.

What is the solution?

The agreement envisages partnership and cooperation between the two parties in the restoration and development of the aviation infrastructure of Ukraine.

The memorandum with Hyundai E&C opens up new opportunities for the development and modernization of civil aviation, and such cooperation will significantly strengthen the growth and expansion of Boryspil Airport and the entire Ukrainian aviation industry.

"Ukraine has shown incredible resilience and determination in overcoming challenges, and we are proud to be a part of this recovery process," Hyundai E&C CEO Yoon Young-Joon said. "We are investing our resources, knowledge, and energy to promote infrastructure development and support Ukraine's economic growth."

How does it work?

The Korean edition of The Korea Herald reports that the agreement provides that Hyundai E&C will restore the runways and a new cargo terminal at Boryspil International Airport. The company is conducting a technical and economic feasibility study of the cargo terminal.

Hyundai E&C said it will use its technology and experience gained while participating in construction projects, including at Incheon International Airport, Singapore Changi Airport, and Chinchero International Airport in Peru.

The company added that construction would begin after the end of Russia's war. Starting with the airport expansion project, Hyundai E&C is also looking to get involved in redevelopment projects in other areas.

"Hyundai E&C will cooperate with Ukraine to restore not only the country's transport infrastructure, including airports and railways but also its energy infrastructure," said Hyundai E&C CEO.

Hyundai E&C is one of the leading construction companies in the world, known for its large-scale investment projects in the reconstruction and development of international airports and significant experience in the construction and modernization of airport infrastructure using smart management and security systems.
