Ukraine conducted electricity import test from Romania: why we need this solution

"Energy Company of Ukraine" (EKU) carried out a test import of electricity from Romania.

The press service of the company informed Ukrinform about this.

What is the problem?

The russian missile attack on November 23 led to the temporary blackout of all nuclear power plants equipped with thermal and hydroelectric plants. Objects of the power transmission system were also affected.

What is the solution?

"On November 27, 2022, the state energy trader JSC "Energy Company of Ukraine" (JSC "ECU") imported non-commercial volumes of electricity from Romania with a capacity of 1 MW for two hours (from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) in a test mode," ECU reported.

How does it work?

The company stated that importing electricity could become an additional tool for stabilizing Ukraine's energy system. Test deliveries are necessary to check the technical feasibility of importing electricity from Europe if required.

For the first time, ECU carried out a test import of electricity from Slovakia on October 27. The second test import took place on November 19.

Earlier, the General Director of ECU stated that now Ukraine can import 500-600 MW of electricity — for comparison, this is about half of Kyiv's consumption needs. However, due to the difference in electricity prices in Europe and Ukraine, commercial imports require financial support.
