Ukrainian Olha Kharlan lost in her first bout at the 2020 Olympics. The fencer lost to the Chinese fencer, Yang Hengyu, with a score of 12:15. After a sensational defeat, the Ukrainian stopped performing at the Games in Tokyo.

"Did I disappoint myself? Yes. Do I feel weak? Yes. Is anyone to blame but me? No. We're the masters of our own destiny and life. Today I couldn't cope with emotions. Sometimes emotions control us. Today it was like this. A year and a half without competitive practice probably affected me. What happened today is hard to call fencing. It happens. It's a pity that today is this day," Kharlan wrote on Instagram.

The Ukrainian also stated that she now wanted to take a break from fencing.

"Now I really want to relax morally, and live life without a sword. I want to wake up and not think how many days are left before the Olympics. I'm tired. I've never been so open on social media. I just understand that there will be many questions. So, maybe, with my little revelation, there will be less of them," Olha Kharlan's message reads.
