“Nice stories don’t win wars”: Lithuania's foreign minister considers it cynical to talk about unity with Ukraine without real help

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, noted that without significant arms supplies and security guarantees, words of unity and solidarity with Ukraine turn into cynicism.

The Lithuanian minister wrote about this on Twitter (X).

Landsbergis is convinced that the West needs to help Ukraine win over Russia.

"Nice stories don't win wars. Without significant deliveries of weapons and real security guarantees the glorious narrative of unity and solidarity with Ukraine is wearing thin and rapidly approaching cynicism," he emphasized.

According to the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry head, comforting stories can help win elections. Still, if they are false, "they immobilize us, prevent us from taking real action, while Ukrainians continue to die for us."

"Ukrainians have performed miracles and repeatedly embarrassed the "experts." We should be grateful to have such an ally, but instead of helping them win, we ask them to fight with one hand tied behind their back," added Landsbergis.

He warns that Europe is in great danger because Russia is "emboldened by appeasement."

"The fact remains that anything other than total restoration of Ukraine's sovereignty and security would invite Putin and the world's tyrants to keep going, to keep crossing borders, to keep raping and murdering to achieve their aims," he added.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the only way for the West is to change course, become serious, and help Ukraine achieve complete victory.

Landsbergis has previously stated that the West is making mistakes in supporting Ukraine, which may have consequences for how history develops further.

"Such mistakes set the course for the whole century. And there are no excuses for all this," he said.

He also pointed out that Ukraine will not be able to win the war if the US does not show its leadership.

For reference:

On January 25, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, visited Ukraine on a working visit. Then Landsbergis said that Ukraine, which is currently restraining an aggressive Russia, should remain the focus of the EU's attention because it is fighting on the battlefield not only for itself but also for the whole of Europe, so its victory in this war has existential significance for the whole of Europe.

It is worth noting that Lithuania's financial assistance to Ukraine has amounted to more than 1 billion euros since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

In particular, Ukraine and Lithuania agreed to jointly produce drones and electronic warfare (EW). A joint-stock company, "Ukrainian Defense Industry," is starting a strategic partnership with four Lithuanian companies.
