Ukraine needs to open up about hard truths from battlefield – US diplomat

State Department's speaker James Rubin says the Ukrainian government sometimes "resists" some information about the war, but better awareness of the situation at the front will increase its need for assistance.

Ukraine should accept the fact that military reporters sometimes report things that are "not necessarily in the interests of Volodymyr Zelensky."

According to the US State Department representative, when journalists cover bad news from the front, it is still better than "the controlled environment that Russia has created for all its people."

From this point of view, Rubin said, Ukraine is not yet a "full-fledged democracy," although the country is "moving in the right direction."

The American diplomat emphasizes that better access to information from the front line will increase Ukraine's urgent need for more assistance from its allies.

Russian troops have intensified their assaults at the front. Enemy forces managed to capture Avdiivka and some neighboring villages.

British intelligence believes that Chasiv Yar near Bakhmut is likely to be the next target of the Russian forces in the Donetsk region, as it is currently located about 5 km from the front line.

ISW believes that further delays in providing Western security assistance will likely delay Ukrainian efforts to regain initiative throughout the entire theater of operations. This could also be harmed by Russia's planned new offensive in the spring and summer of this year.

American analysts have also stated that Russian troops are preparing for a new offensive in the summer of 2024, and that the invaders will continue to take offensive actions to destabilize Ukrainian defense lines.
