The UN's top court has jurisdiction to rule on a request by Ukraine for a declaration that Kyiv is not responsible for genocide.

In its lawsuit against Russia, Ukraine demands it be held accountable for distorting the concept of genocide.
During a meeting at the Peace Palace, it was recognized that the court has jurisdiction to hear the case. The next step is now to consider the merits.
The International Court of Justice said it did not have jurisdiction in two other aspects of Ukraine's case — claims that Russia's invasion violated the 1948 genocide convention and that Moscow's recognition of two breakaway republics in eastern Ukraine also amounted to a breach of the convention.

Moscow rejects the allegations and argued last year that the court should throw out the case before even considering the merits of Kyiv's claims.

The International Court of Justice announced the final judgment in Ukraine's lawsuit against Russia in the case of violation of the Conventions on the Prohibition of the Financing of Terrorism and the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination in Donbas and Crimea.

The UN Court recognized the violation by Russia of certain parts of the terrorism funding convention

Ukraine filed this lawsuit against Russia with the UN Court on January 16, 2017, in connection with the aggression of the invaders in Crimea and Donbas. The lawsuit alleges that the Kremlin has violated two conventions: on combating the financing of terrorism and on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination.
