Italian parliament's lower house commits to prolonging military aid for Ukraine

On January 10, the Lower House of the Italian Parliament voted in favor of a resolution to continue military support for Ukraine.

The resolution obliges the government to "continue to support the Ukrainian authorities, in accordance with its commitments and what will be agreed within NATO and the EU, as well as in international forums, including Italy, including through the transfer of military assets, materials and equipment."

The resolution was supported by 195 votes.

"Our support for Ukraine remains strong and absolutely unchanged," Defense Minister Guido Crozetto said in a speech to parliament on the extension of military aid to Kyiv, a decision approved by the Council of Ministers last December.

The defense minister says "there is still a long way to go with Ukraine, but it would be a dramatic strategic and political mistake to take a step back now."

He emphasized that "support must continue until Russian attacks stop."

Crozetto also noted that among the various actions taken by Italy is the expression of interest in participating in the "demining coalition" project promoted by Lithuania to demine the territory.

"After seven officially formalized packages, we have recently given the green light to send the eighth tranche of equipment, materials and systems to Kyiv. This package of equipment and weapon systems is also aimed solely and exclusively at strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities."

In December 2023, the Italian government passed a resolution allowing to provide military support to Ukraine until the end of 2024.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called on the EU to form its own army, which would play a role in maintaining peace and preventing conflicts.
