Ukraine condemns illegal and void Russian plans for presidential elections in occupied territories

Russia's plans to hold presidential elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine are illegal and void.

The press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported this.

"The holding of Russian elections on Ukrainian territories grossly violates the Constitution and legislation of Ukraine, the norms and principles of international law, in particular the UN Charter. Like the rest of similar propaganda measures in the past, such an election process will be illegal and void," the press service writes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that the inclusion of votes received in the temporarily occupied territories will call into question the legitimacy of the entire result of the Russian presidential election.

In particular, the ministry urged:

  • the international community strongly condemns the terrorist country's intention to hold elections in the temporarily occupied territories;
  • impose sanctions on those involved in the organization and conduct of elections;
  • foreign states should not send their own citizens as observers to pseudo-elections. Criminal liability should be provided for those who will participate.

"Any elections in Russia have nothing to do with democracy. They serve only as a tool to keep the Russian regime in power,"  the Ministry of Foreign Affairs writes.

As previously reported by Rubryka, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin announced that he would run for a new presidential term next year. On the eve of the elections, journalists decided to analyze in what condition the head of the Kremlin would go for the 5th term and rule the country at least until 2030. They conclude that Putin is very tired and is behaving strangely.

For reference:

Back in February, in the Federation Council, the Russians announced plans to hold elections in the captured territories of Ukraine.

British intelligence noted that the Russian Federation wants to show the occupied territories as its "integral parts" by intending to hold a vote on the same day as the elections in Russia.

Moreover, at the end of May in Russia, changes were made to the law, which, in particular, allows elections to be held in the occupied territories.

Subsequently, Ella Pamfilova, head of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, stated that the Russian Central Election Commission may postpone the "elections" in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine if the situation worsens there.
