Ukraine performed over 250 organ transplants in six months

Ukrainian medics performed 257 transplant operations in six months, making it 70% more than last year, the Ukrainian Center of Transplantation reports.

Doctors of the western Lviv city performed the most operations – 59.

The percentage of transplants from deceased donors is steadily increasing to over 62% of the total number of operations. This ratio defines the transplantation system's efficiency. During the first six months of the year, 15 more medical institutions were added to the list of medical institutions where brain death is diagnosed.

Medical transplant teams continue to develop new types of high-tech interventions. The First Medical Association of Lviv performed the first pancreas transplant, and Feofaniya Clinical Hospital became the second center in Ukraine to transplant lungs.

Ukrainian medics have already performed 157 bone marrow transplants, including 29 for children. Most patients received such medical care at the National Children's Hospital Okhmatdyt (35), the National Cancer Institute (33), and the Cherkasy Clinical Oncology Center (24).

According to Dmytro Koval, CEO of the Ukrainian Center for Transplantation, during this six-month period, "2 or even 3 patients received medical care by transplantation every day."

This is great teamwork of doctors and other participants of the transplantation field. The trust of Ukrainians and a clear understanding that transplantation is becoming treatment method makes this more available. We thank the Armed Forces for the opportunity to boost this field, Koval said.
