UN vote overwhelmingly to condemn russia's attempt to annex occupied regions of Ukraine

At its meeting on October 12, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning the illegal "referendums" that russia held in the temporarily occupied territories of 4 regions of Ukraine, the European Pravada reports.

The General Assembly of the United Nations has overwhelmingly voted in favor of a draft resolution condemning the russian federation's attempt to annex four regions of Ukraine.

It became known that the resolution was supported by 143 out of 193 members of the UN General Assembly.

Five states—russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea, and Nicaragua—voted against it.

The remaining 35 abstained during the vote.

The support of two-thirds of the body's members was required to adopt the resolution.

Thus, the majority of the Organization's members condemned the russian federation's illegal actions in annexing Ukrainian territories. The number of states was even more significant than during March's condemnation of russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In addition to condemning the "referendums," the document prepared by Albania calls on states, international organizations, and specialized UN agencies not to recognize any changes in the status of Ukraine's regions and also demands that russia cancel the annexation and withdraw all its troops from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

In addition, the resolution calls for support for "the de-escalation of the current situation and the peaceful resolution of the conflict through political dialogue, negotiations, mediation, and other peaceful means," observing the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, reacted to the voting results and the support for Ukraine.

"Grateful to 143 states that supported historic UNGA resolution 'Territorial integrity of Ukraine: defending the principles of the UN Charter.'

The world had its say—RF's attempt at annexation is worthless & will never be recognized by free nations. Ukraine will return all its lands," the head of state emphasized.

russia strongly opposed the adoption of the resolution, and on September 30, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, it vetoed it.

Later, Moscow tried unsuccessfully to have a closed-door vote on the resolution, arguing that the open vote was politicized.

The vote in the General Assembly was another defeat for russia, which claims that its annexation of four Ukrainian regions complies with international law and the UN Charter.
