The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, spoke about a telephone conversation with the President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, which was first reported by the German side.

He wrote about this on his Twitter.

Zelensky noted that the conversation was "good and constructive."

"Had a good, constructive, important conversation with 🇩🇪 Federal President Mr. Steinmeier. Thanked for strong support for 🇺🇦. Expect it to be intensified. 🇩🇪leadership is important to counter 🇷🇺 aggression. Informed about situation on the frontline, critical situation in Mariupol," the President wrote.

Speaking about the conversation between the leaders, German media quoted Steinmeier's spokeswoman as saying that Volodymyr Zelensky had invited him and the chancellor to visit Ukraine.

To recap, in recent weeks relations between Kyiv and Berlin have become tenser because of the refusal to accept Steinmeier; the Ukrainian side refused to receive him because of his many years of close relations with russia, inviting the Federal Chancellor instead.

Olaf Scholz admitted that he did not want to go to Kyiv until President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was there, and hinted that he expected Ukraine to take steps to resolve the situation.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andrii Melnyk criticized Scholz's refusal to visit Kyiv, noting that he is "еine beleidigte Leberwurst zu spielen" (German idiom, which means "pretend to be innocently offended").
