"Some deputies quickly 'gain on different colors,'" Zelenskyi on referendum law

The Law "On Democracy through an All-Ukrainian Referendum" adopted by the Verkhovna Rada provides an opportunity for all citizens of Ukraine to make important decisions regarding the life of the country. And politicians are losing some of their influence, so they criticize this law.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi stated this in his vlog.

"If you notice, it's a certain consistent pattern: if the society supports something and politicians are against it, then it wants to take something away from politicians. It was the case when we abolished parliamentary immunity, and it's happened now. For some, it's a catastrophe, because now not only they can make important decisions, but all citizens of Ukraine in a referendum," Zelenskyi said.

He recalled that adopting the law on the referendum was among the points of his election program. "We promised it, we did it. My congratulations to the people of Ukraine, my condolences to certain parties."

President added some deputies opposed the law but had now changed their position.

He called Batkivshchyna leader Yulia Tymoshenko's intention to hold a referendum a "political change of clothes" that the party had been doing for 20 years.

"They say the fastest creature on the planet is a cheetah. In fact, it's not true. It's some deputies and their speed with which they gain on different colors. At first, they were strongly against the referendum, but Bam! Voila! Now they initiate a referendum on 5 issues or more. I think we can make meme facepalm the official logo of this political force. And the slogan "20 years in changing clothes!"

Zelenskyi expressed hope that in the future there would be fewer people's deputies who "have the change of clothes" quickly.

"There'll be fewer deputies: not 450, but 300. This law is next in line; we also promised it and should do it. By the way, 300 votes are needed for 300 deputies," he said.

"I wonder who'll join the Servant of the People faction to make this decision possible?" the president asked and called on citizens to attentively watch voting for this law name by name.

As reported, on January 27, Yulia Tymoshenko stated in the Verkhovna Rada that Batkivshchyna wanted to initiate referendums on five issues (concerning Ukrainian gas and nuclear electricity, sale of agricultural land; sale of strategic property (gas pipeline, railway, Ukrposhta, etc.); medical marijuana and gambling).
