Germany pledges to transfer 10,000 pieces of artillery ammunition to Ukraine, previously announced as part of a military aid package, Deutsche Welle reports.

Berlin decided to supply Ukraine with ammunition in three stages, says German defense ministry representative Christian Freuding.

Germany will take part in a Czech initiative to purchase shells for the Ukrainian forces.

For the long term, the state has signed a bilateral agreement to supply Ukraine with another 100,000 shells, starting around the fourth quarter of 2024.

Freuding refused to say with which country the agreement was signed. What Ukraine needs most to successfully repel Russian aggression is "artillery shells, ammunition and missiles for modern air defense systems, as well as armored combat vehicles."

Artillery shells are now one of the main needs of Ukrainian troops, as their use allows them to deter the numerous offensives.

Last month, Czech President Petr Pavel said that his country had found about 800,000 rounds of ammunition that could be transferred to Ukraine outside the EU.

A number of Western countries have already announced that they are joining the Czech initiative, as they have allocated funds for the purchase of shells.
