The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will provide Ukraine with €150 billion, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Friday.

The funds will support the state-owned power company Ukrenergo.

These funds have been allocated to finance the Special Capital Support Project and will be used to cover Ukrenergo's key costs for balancing the power system and fulfilling the special duties assigned to the company by the state.

"We signed the relevant agreements today (December 15 – Ed.). This is a significant contribution of the partners to Ukraine's energy security and stable energy supply to Ukrainian consumers," Shmyhal said.

The Prime Minister pointed out that projects for the comprehensive reconstruction and restoration of trunk networks are also being implemented in cooperation with the EBRD.

"We are grateful to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, personally to President Odile Renaud-Basso and all our partners for supporting the energy sector of Ukraine," the Prime Minister added.

After draining Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy grid last winter, the increased electricity consumption has been a long-term issue, which led to a deficit in the energy system.

Ukraine was forced to attract emergency assistance with a capacity of 300 MW from Romania and Poland for the third time since the beginning of winter.
