Free journalism school for teenagers opened in western Rivne

Ukraine's volunteer network of Honcharenko Center started a free media school for teenagers.

The school will teach students the basic rules of media literacy, blogging, and journalism, the press release says.

What is the problem?

Students usually face the choice of their future job in high school on the eve of final exams and admission to a university. However, before that, teenagers do not have the opportunity to "try on" their future profession and really understand what exactly could become their life's work.

What is the solution?

A free media school has been launched in Rivne for teenagers who dream of becoming professional journalists or bloggers. The school's head Mykhailo Prysiazhnyuk says the team of media school teachers will share their experience and help the participants create their own content.

The course is also aimed at giving children self-confidence, not just teaching them the basics of blogging or journalism. Working on camera will help teenagers develop their communication and social skills, and professional mentors will help them learn the basics of modern jobs, says the center's head.

How does it work?

The media school includes theoretical and practical modules: theoretical and practical, says Ruslana Bronovytska, the course's teacher.

This course is designed for students who want to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge of the basics of media literacy, video blogging and journalism. But, of course, there will be more practice, says the multimedia school teacher.

The kids will be able to try on the professions of news anchor, journalist, and cameraman and learn the basics of editing. Together with their mentors, they will prepare a final report, social advertisement, or video blog.

Due to the Russian full-scale war, many Ukrainians listened to popular Russian music and consumed Russian TV shows and films online.

Up to 81% of Ukrainians have completely stopped consuming Russian-made media products, according to the Ukrainian Media Literacy Index study conducted by the Detector Media NGO.
