NATO smooth Ukraine's road to membership, removing alliance plan

After intensive negotiations, NATO allies agreed to remove the Membership Action Plan (MAP) from Ukraine's path to membership.

Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, announced this on Twitter.

"Following intensive talks, NATO allies have reached a consensus on removing MAP from Ukraine's path to membership. I welcome this long-awaited decision that shortens our path to NATO. It is also the best moment to offer clarity on the invitation to Ukraine to become a member," said Ukraine's top diplomat.

As reported, the NATO summit will be held in Vilnius on July 11-12.

The Membership Action Plan (MAP) is NATO's program of advice, assistance, and practical support that considers the individual needs of states that have declared their desire to join the Alliance. One of the main elements of the MAP was the development by the applicant countries of individual annual national programs that covered political, economic, defense, resource, security, and legal aspects.
