Helicopter crash in Brovary: Ukraine's internal ministry leadership and 18 people dead

On January 18, a helicopter crashed near a kindergarten and high-rise buildings in Brovary, Kyiv region. A fire started after.

It became known that Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs leadership died due to the helicopter crash in Brovary — they were in Ukraine's State Emergency Service helicopter.

Ukraine's National Police chief, Ihor Klymenko, announced this, adding that 17 people are currently known to have died, including two children.

"This morning, on January 18, a helicopter of the State Emergency Service crashed in Brovary. As a result of the crash, the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs died: the minister, the first deputy minister, and the state secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Yurii Lubkovych, ed.)," Klymenko reported on Telegram.

Of the injured, 9 were on board the helicopter. Twenty-two victims are in the hospital, including ten children.

"22 victims are in the hospital, including ten children. All specialized services are working at the scene. The inspection of the scene is ongoing," Klymenko added.

Later, he announced that due to the helicopter crash in Brovary, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Denys Monastyrskyi, and his first deputy, Yevhen Yenin, were killed.

UPD: The number of victims in Brovary has increased: 18 people, including three children, died due to the fall of a helicopter near a kindergarten.

The head of the Kyiv regional military administration, Oleksii Kuleba, reported on Telegram.

"Brovary tragedy. The number of victims has increased.

As of 10:30 a.m. — 18 were dead, including three children.

It is known 29 are wounded, including 15 children. All necessary assistance is provided to the victims.

All services are working on the site," said the head of the region.

The deputy head of the Office of the President, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, reported that an aircraft fell on the object of social infrastructure. 

"Brovary. An aircraft has just crashed into a social infrastructure facility. We are investigating the details of the victims and the circumstances," Tymoshenko said.

Later it became known that a helicopter crashed near a kindergarten and high-rise buildings. The Ukrainian Pravda source in the Kyiv regional military administration and the spokesperson of the Kyiv region police Iryna Prianyshnykova confirmed this in a comment to Ukrainian Pravda.

Oleksii Kuleba, the head of the Kyiv regional military administration, said children and employees of the institution were in the kindergarten at the time of the tragedy. At present, everyone has been evacuated. There are victims.

Prianyshnykova added that the State Emergency Service, the city mayor, the police, and all other services are already on site.

Yurii Ihnat, the spokesman of the Air Force Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, clarified that the helicopter that fell in Brovary was intended for the needs of the State Emergency Service.
