According to American TIME magazine, Iranian women became the "Heroes of the year".

This is reported on the magazine's Instagram page.

As author and former TIME columnist Azadeh Moaveni writes, the movement led by Iranian women is "educated, liberal, secular, raised on higher expectations, and desperate for normality."

According to her, the participants of the protests are not like previous generations of Iranians.

She noted, "sometimes they feel more like transnational Gen Z than Iranians."

Reference

The impetus for the protests was the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini in Tehran after she was arrested by the "morality police" for improperly wearing a hijab.

Police said Amina suffered a heart attack after being taken into custody. Relatives of the Iranian woman deny that she suffered from any heart disease.

Immediately after that, protests broke out in the capital and later in other cities of Iran. Videos of protesters shouting "Death to the dictator" —referring to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — circulated online.

Under Iranian law introduced after the 1979 revolution, women are required to cover their hair and wear long, loose clothing to cover their bodies. Violators face a public reprimand, fine or arrest.
