The US presidential administration plans to provide Ukraine with multiple rocket launching systems capable of hitting targets at more than 64 kilometers.

The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources.

The range of MLRS that the United States plans to send is about twice as big as the M777 howitzers already provided to Ukraine.

Last week, US officials said the White House was close to deciding which systems to provide to Kyiv but didn't name a specific weapon to be sent.

On Monday night, officials said the goal of sending a guided multiple rocket launching system (GMLRS) was to increase Ukraine's firepower against russian forces invading Donbas, preventing Kyiv from expanding the war deep into russia.

The MLRS considered for supply has a much shorter range than the military tactical missile system, which can cover a distance of almost 300 km and which the US administration doesn't include in its next package of weapons for Ukraine.

It is unknown how many GMLRS systems the United States will supply. One official said they could arrive in Ukraine in a few weeks. Learning to use them will begin quickly and take at least ten days.

The missiles will be mounted on a wheeled launcher called the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.

The administration is expected to announce its decision this week.
