White House prepares to announce a massive package of sanctions against Russia on Thursday - Media

The White House is preparing to announce a massive package of sanctions and other restrictions on Thursday for Russian officials and organizations involved in Russia's malicious activities against the United States.

The American TV channel CNN reported this referring to numerous sources aware of the administration's plans, Ukrinform reports.

"The Biden administration is expected to announce sanctions against individuals and legal entities in Russia on Thursday, as well as to remove a dozen Russian diplomats from the United States in response to a hacker attack on SolarWinds and interference in the election," the statement said.

Another source confirmed that the US administration plans to announce new restrictions against Russia on Thursday and do so in coordination with the European Union.

It is specified that the sanctions will be directed against Russian intelligence, individual government officials, as well as entities involved in the cyber hacking of SolarWinds software.

According to officials, the sanctions will be implemented as a decree of the President of the United States, as well as relevant orders from the State Department and the US Treasury Department.

As reported by Rubryka, in the first days after the inauguration in January this year, US President Joe Biden instructed intelligence to assess Russia's malicious activities.

This included a full assessment of cyberattacks against SolarWinds; Russia's interference in the 2020 elections; its use of chemical weapons against opposition leader Aleksei Navalnyi, as well as allegations of rewards for attacks on the US military in Afghanistan.

As a result of this inspection, the Biden administration promised to take visible and non-public retaliatory steps against Russia.
