Sheremet's case: Antonenko's defense states that "Belarusian records" need to be carefully checked

The new recordings of 2012, where the Belarusian secret services allegedly discuss the intention to kill journalist Pavel Sheremet with an explosive, need to be carefully checked.

This is expressed in the official statement of the defenders of the accused Andrii Antonenko in the journalist Pavel Sheremet's murder case, published on the website of the "Sense Ukraine" law firm.

"The information released by Ihor Makar about the preparation of the political assassination of Pavel Sheremet by the KGB in Belarus needs to be carefully checked. We hope that the competent authorities of European countries will do this, not Ukrainian counterfeiters. The defense is already working in this direction," the statement said.

The law firm said that the "Belarusian footprint" given Sheremet's political position should be the top priority of the investigation, "especially given that the assassination took place on July 20, the day of Aleksandr Lukashenko's first inauguration in 1994, the date he celebrates unofficially every year, according to media reports."

"If the information is confirmed, it destroys the crazy version of the prosecution about unknown individuals who focused on "volunteer groups" during the selection of executers with low moral qualities," the lawyers said.

"Sense Ukraine" stated that the defense, "having carefully studied all the "evidence" presented by the investigation, claims, based on the available materials, that previously, the version of the Belarusian special services involvement wasn't investigated or considered at all."

"The National Police of Ukraine and representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs disseminated false information that the alleged "Belarusian version" of the assassins was new to them and that it didn't contradict the accusation made by Mr. Antonenko, Mr. Dugar and Mr. Kuzmenko. However, this is obvious misinformation," the lawyers said.

Among other things, the law firm clarified that in the case, there were no remote hints of the accused's connection with any special services, including foreign ones.

Earlier, the media reported that back in 2012, the secret services of Belarus on the orders of Lukashenko discussed the possibility of blowing up Pavel Sheremet with an explosive, which was carried out in 2016.
