The Chernihiv region will receive 400,000 euros of French aid to restore the central regional hospital and the Chernihiv Polytechnic National University, which were damaged by Russian shelling.

Vyacheslav Chaus, head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, reported this on Telegram.

What is the problem?

On April 17, 2024, the Russian military attacked the highly populated district of Chernihiv. The impact on a critical social infrastructure was documented. The enemy targeted the city with three rockets.

Later, it became known that an explosive wave damaged the central building of the Chernihiv Polytechnic National University as a result of a rocket attack on the city.

Furthermore, the main regional hospital, situated only 150 meters from the blast site, was also impacted. In both February and March 2022, it was repeatedly targeted by Russian shelling.

"To date, we have counted 120 windows that need to be replaced entirely and about 60-70 doors (we are currently at the stage of counting). Everything needs to be replaced: ceilings, appliances, equipment, furniture, and so on. Practically everything that was restored after 2022 was broken yesterday [April 17 – ed.].

You know how our managers say: "We've been through it before." The building of the polyclinic remains unrestored. We are waiting for the money already allocated; we are in the process of receiving it. That's why, I think, we will still restore it again," said the director of the central district hospital, Inna Fesenko.

At that time, 18 residents of Chernihiv were killed, and 77 were injured.

How does it work?

"Each, the Chernihiv Regional Hospital and Polytechnic, will receive 200,000 euros for restoration due to the damage caused by Russian terrorism.

Additionally, France is providing electric generators and helping to rebuild homes, including windows and doors. The Ambassador of France to Ukraine, Gaël Veyssière, announced this aid package during a meeting at the regional state administration today," the head of the region wrote.

According to Chaus, entrepreneurs – the Association of Carpenters of France – offered their help in restoring the homes of Chernihiv residents.

"Delegation visits to the region are regular, as is France's timely and quick support.

However, today was almost the first time that they talked not only about aid but also about possible ways of establishing mutually beneficial partnership relations between regions/communities/cities," the head of the regional state administration emphasized.
