Death toll rises to nine in Russia's assault on Chernihiv, 20 civilians injured

On the morning of April 17, Russian forces launched three rockets at the densely populated district of Chernihiv. The attack resulted in the deaths of 9 people and left 20 residents with varying degrees of injuries.

Chernihiv's acting Mayor, Oleksandr Lomako, and the head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, Viacheslav Chaus, reported that on Telegram; the General Director of Chernihiv Regional Hospital, Andriy Zhydenkov, said this on the broadcast of the news marathon.

"As of 10:40 a.m., eight people have been killed and 18 injured as a result of Russian missile strikes on Chernihiv. The search and rescue operation is ongoing," the official stressed.

In addition, buildings, many cars, and social and urban infrastructure were damaged due to the Russian strike.

"At 9:03, three explosions echoed through the city in a densely populated microdistrict just slightly outside the central area. One of the blasts directly hit an 8-story social infrastructure building, causing visible destruction to the walls on the 3rd to 6th floors and its nearby outbuilding," Lomako explained.

The Chernihiv Regional Blood Center reported an urgent need for blood. Rh-negative donors are especially needed.

In turn, Andriy Zhydenko, general director of the Chernihiv Regional Hospital, said that nine victims were brought to his hospital alone.

"Nine injured people were brought to us. Three are in serious condition; the others are in moderate condition. Most of the injured were taken to the Chernihiv District Hospital because it is located near the epicenter of the strike," he said.

According to the doctor, the victims have mine-explosive, craniocerebral injuries, chest injuries, and damage to the vascular system of the limbs.

Later, the regional military administration announced that currently, nine people have died and more than 20 are injured.

"Civil infrastructure buildings and dozens of vehicles have been damaged. A headquarters has been established. All services and volunteers are working," they added.

Updated: the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko reported on Telegram about the increase in the number of dead and injured.

"Chernihiv. Emergency services are eliminating the consequences of rocket attacks on the city. 11 dead, 22 injured as of now. We have reports of at least three missing persons.

There are still people under the rubble. A search and rescue operation is underway," the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.
