Ukrainian troops advance to southwest of Staromaiorske – ISW

The Russian army has moved to a section of the R07 highway from Kupiansk to Svatove, east of Tabaivka, in the northeastern Kharkiv region. There were also reports of movement on the northern outskirts of Avdiivka. 

Positional battles continued on the left bank of the southern Kherson region, including in the area of Krynky. Ukrainian forces advanced southwest of Staramaiorske in the eastern Donetsk region, Rubryka reports, citing the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Operation #1 – Luhansk region

Recently, Russian forces confirmed their advance near Kupiansk amid ongoing positional battles in this area on February 1. A geolocation video published on February 1 shows Russian forces advancing to a section of the R07 highway from Kupiansk to Svatove, east of Tabaivka (southeast of Synkivka).

Ukrainian and Russian sources reported that positional battles took place:

  • northeast of Kupiansk in the area of Synkivka and Lake Lyman.
  • southeast of Kupiansk in the areas of Ivanivka, Berestove, Krokhmalne, and Tabaivka.

Positional battles took place near Kreminna on February 1, but there were no confirmed changes on the front line in this area.

Ukrainian and Russian sources reported that positional battles took place:

  • west of Kreminna in the areas of Terniv, Torsk, Yampolivka, and Dibrova;
  • south of Kreminna in the area of Bilohorivka.

Operation #2 – Donetsk region

Positional battles took place near Bakhmut on February 1, but there were no confirmed changes on the front line in this area.

Russian and Ukrainian sources reported that positional battles continued:

  • west of Bakhmut in the areas of Bohdanivka and Ivanivskyi;
  • southwest of Bakhmut in the areas of Klishchyivka and Andriivka.

Russian forces recently made slight advancements near Avdiivka amid ongoing positional battles in this area on February 1. Geolocation images published on February 1 indicate that the Russian troops recently advanced slightly near summer cottages on the northern outskirts of Avdiivka.

Russian and Ukrainian sources reported that positional battles took place:

  • northwest of Avdiivka in the Stepove area;
  • near the Avdiivka coke and chemical plant on the northwest outskirts of Avdiivka;
  • near the "Tsarske Poliuvannia" restaurant on the southeast outskirts of Avdiivka;
  • west of Avdiivka in the Severne area;
  • southwest of Avdiivka in the areas of Opytne, Pervomaiske, and Nevelske.

A representative of the Ukrainian brigade operating on the Avdiivka front stated that Russian forces have kept their tactics the same in the area and continue constant infantry attacks.

Russian forces recently made confirmed advancements west of Donetsk amid ongoing positional battles on February 1.

A geolocation video published on February 1 shows that Russian forces recently made slight advancements northeast of Heorhiivka (west of Donetsk).

Positional battles continued:

  • west of Donetsk in the areas of Krasnohorivka and Heorhiivka;
  • southwest of Donetsk in the areas of Pobieda and Novomykhailivka.

"Southern Axis"

Ukrainian forces recently made advancements near the border of the Donetsk and southeastern Zaporizhzhia regions amid ongoing positional battles in this area on February 1. A geolocation video published on February 1 shows that Ukrainian forces recently advanced southwest of Staramaiorske (south of Velyka Novosilka).

Russian and Ukrainian sources reported that positional battles took place:

  • southeast of Velyka Novosilka near Zolota Niva;
  • south of Velyka Novosilka near Staramaiorske and Urozhaine;
  • southwest of Velyka Novosilka near Pryiutne.

Positional battles took place in the western part of the Zaporizhzhia region on February 1, but there were no confirmed changes on the front line in this area.

Russian and Ukrainian sources reported that positional battles occurred near Verbove, Robotyne, and Novoprokhorivka (south of Robotyne).

Positional battles also continued on the left bank of the Kherson region, including in the area of Krynky. Russian bloggers continued to emphasize that Ukrainian drone operations pose a significant threat to Russian forces on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River.

Key ISW conclusions for February 1:

  • Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine General Valerii Zaluzhnyi presented a comprehensive strategy to seize and maintain the initiative across the entire theater of operations in Ukraine to support Ukrainian victories on the battlefield despite Russia's numerical superiority in human resources and equipment. Zaluzhnyi's strategy aims to address existing challenges for Ukraine and achieve an advantage over Russian forces through large-scale technological innovations and adaptation.
  • On the night of January 31 to February 1, Ukrainian forces successfully struck and sank a ship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the Black Sea near occupied Crimea.
  • Russian military bloggers continued to express disappointment over the ongoing tactical mistakes of Russian forces during offensive operations in the western part of the Donetsk region.
  • The European Union unanimously approved a financial support package for Ukraine for 2024-2027.
  • EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated that the EU cannot deliver the promised one million rounds of ammunition to Ukraine by March 2024 but plans to fulfill this commitment by the end of 2024.
  • Head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, appointed another of his children to a high position in the Chechen government as of January 31.
  • Russian forces recently made confirmed advancements near Kupiansk, Avdiivka, and Donetsk amid ongoing positional battles along the entire front line on February 1.
  • Turkish banks began closing Russian company accounts due to the threat of additional sanctions from the United States.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia plans to integrate the occupied territories of Ukraine into Russia within the next six years.
