US warns Beijing of severe repercussions for Chinese companies aiding Russia's war

The United States government has evidence that Chinese firms are likely helping supply equipment to the Russian military to circumvent Western sanctions. Washington is urging Beijing to take strict measures or face consequences.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated this, according to Reuters.

Yellen said she raised the issue during two days of meetings with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

She expressed her concern that equipment for the Russian military is getting to the Russian Federation to bypass sanctions.

"I emphasized that companies should not provide material support to the Russian defense industry and that they would face significant consequences if they did," Yellen said.

The minister emphasized that:

"The United States is determined to do everything possible to stop this flow of equipment that is helping Russia wage this brutal and illegal war."

Yellen warned that any companies that help Moscow in military actions could face sanctions.

She emphasized that the US government has already imposed sanctions against several private firms, including in China, that help Russia obtain equipment and against some financial institutions that may contribute to these efforts.

At the same time, Yellen did not specify which Chinese companies were in question but added that they were private and said that she did not suggest that this was done with the knowledge of the Chinese government.

For reference:

In October, the US Department of Commerce added 42 Chinese companies supplying Russia with American-made integrated circuits to the state export control registry.

As Rubryka reported, China is the leading supplier of critical components for Russian drones that the Russian Federation uses against Ukraine. This was established by the International Working Group on Sanctions against Russia, headed by the head of the Office of the President, Andriy Yermak, and the director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), Ambassador Michael McFaul.

It was also reported that the participants of the EU-US summit held in Washington called on China to use its influence on the Russian Federation to stop its aggression against Ukraine and to enter into direct contact with the Ukrainian authorities to support a lasting and stable post-war peace.
