Japan's FM makes surprise visit to Ukraine

On September 9, for the first time since the beginning of Russian full-scale aggression, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi will pay an unannounced visit to Ukraine to demonstrate support for Kyiv.

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported this.

"During his visit to Ukraine, Foreign Minister Hayashi will confirm to Foreign Minister Kuleba that Japan is cooperating with the international community in implementing tough sanctions against Russia and is providing support to Ukraine to end Russian aggression as soon as possible and will also continue to express Japan's firm position that it on the side of Ukraine," the foreign policy department noted.

In addition, during the visit, issues of organization and holding of a Japanese-Ukrainian conference on promoting economic recovery will be discussed.

Hayashi and Kuleba also plan to exchange views on restoring and reconstructing Ukraine through the public and private sectors.

According to reports, the head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry will discuss the initiative as the chairman of the G7 foreign affairs ministers' meeting to encourage as many countries as possible, including the countries of the Global South, to support Ukraine's efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.

Business representatives will also join the Japanese delegation during this visit.

On August 29, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, held a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida. During the telephone conversation, the Prime Minister of Japan assured the leader of Ukraine of unwavering support for Ukraine.

In addition, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced that Japan will provide aid to Ukraine for up to $7 billion.
