Ukrainians protest against Russian destruction of Dzharylgach Island in single pickets across Europe

Ukrainians and their supporters held protests against the ecocide on the island of Dzharylgach at the hands of the Russian occupiers in the occupied Kherson region.

Rubryka reports, citing the public organization UAnimals.

What is the problem?

Ukraine's General Staff reported earlier that the Russian forces had connected the island of Dzharylgach with the mainland of the Kherson region, filling the crossing with sand. The invaders also set up a training ground on the island and used the protected national nature park for their military purposes.

Eco-activists stress that the strait's closure carries a significant risk for the ecosystem of Dzharylhach Bay.

"What is Dzharylgach? You don't need to explain its value to a Ukrainian," says Ukrainian zoologist Pavlo Holdin. "It is the largest uninhabited island in Europe. The waters around the island are important for marine mammals. They are the habitat for unique coastal groups of dolphins — white-sided and bottlenose dolphins — and have the highest density of porpoises in the whole sea area."

How does it work?

Actions took place in Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Norway, and the Czech Republic.

"We are convinced that Russia must answer for each of its crimes, and we will do everything possible for this," the organization said.

The Russians have been committing ecocide in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion. Rubryka reported that the Russians want to shoot wild animals in the Dzharylhach National Park in the Kherson region.
