Ukrainian scientists and engineers help air force counter Russian bombs and missiles
Scientists and engineers are helping the Ukrainian armed forces counter Russia's regular shelling, during which its troops use missiles, drones, and aerial bombs.
Yurii Ihnat, the spokesperson for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said in a comment to the UNN agency that the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise (KNDISE) is involved in helping the Ukrainian military to understand what capabilities Russia has, what weapons it uses and what it consists of.
This information helps to suppress air targets of the Russian Federation with the help of radar control.
"We need to know what weapons are attacking us. The Air Force sees a target on the radar… Each target has its parameters — flight height, the direction of movement, and so on. What this target consists of is another question. This is what KNDISE studies. Scientists, military personnel, and engineers analyze it to understand how these goals can be countered," Ihnat emphasized.
KNDISE expertise can help deflect Russian aerial bombs using radio-electronic warfare, the spokesperson says, adding that these devices can suppress the GPS signal of guided air bombs.
"They fly in the particular direction per their inertia, and GPS navigation via satellite allows them to be controlled remotely to direct them to their destination," Ihnat said.
The scientists also examine missiles the Russian Federation uses against Ukraine (in particular, cruise missiles). All this information will be helpful for the military to understand "what's inside" Russian weapons.
For example, the Air Force spokesperson mentioned the study by KNDISE experts of Iranian-made Shahed kamikaze drones. They disassembled the drone and discovered that it uses four GPS units.
"If you suppress one, you will also have to suppress the second one, then the third and fourth with the means of radio-electronic warfare. It may seem primitive, but on the other hand, everything is not so simple," Ihnat clarified.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia plans to launch the production of Kh-50 cruise missiles. This may mean an increase in Russian missile attacks on Ukraine in the fall.
