Iran to purchase Su-35 fighter jets from russia

Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations announced on Saturday that a contract with russia for the purchase fourth-generation Su-35 fighter jets was finalized.

The Iranian media IRIB informs that.

The Iranian embassy announced that the Su-35 fighters were technically acceptable for the country. After October 2020, when the arms sales ban on the purchase of conventional weapons Iran was lifted according to UN Security Council Resolution 2231, Iran finally agreed to buy the jets.

Iranian media claim that the russian fighter jet "is one of the most powerful fighters of the fourth generation and above in the world."

No details – neither about the cost of the contract nor about the number of fighter jets that Iran will receive from russia – are publicly available. IRIB said Iran was in talks to buy the fighter jets with several other unnamed countries.

Earlier, the Israeli media, referring to their data, indicated that it could be 24 fighter jets.

In recent months, against the background of the full-scale war of the russian federation against Ukraine, moscow and Tehran have intensified cooperation in the field of security. Among other things, according to the media, russia captures some Western weapons and equipment on the battlefield and sends them to Iran, where, according to the United States, Tehran will try to redesign these systems.

Iran's acquisition of Su-35 aircraft could seriously upset the regional balance of power, which would have far-reaching consequences for the entire region.

For reference:

As Rubryka wrote earlier, Iran secretly provided russia with many bullets, rockets, and mortar shells for the war against Ukraine. It was reported that two russian-flagged cargo ships left an Iranian port in January, heading to russia via the Caspian Sea.

They transported:

  • approximately 100 million bullets,
  • about 300,000 shells.

The ships also had ammunition for MLRS, mortars, and machine guns. russia paid for the ammunition in cash.
