The U.S. believes Ukraine can become a member of NATO without MAP stage, like Finland and Sweden

Chargé d'Affaires of the United States in Ukraine Kristina Kvien believes Ukraine has a chance to become a member of NATO without a stage of the Membership Action Plan, like Finland and Sweden, because it's not a mandatory part of the accession process.

European Pravda reports.

"As for the possibility of Finland's accession without a MAP, the Membership Action Plan has never been a legal requirement for NATO membership, so Ukraine can also join the Alliance without a MAP. However, I wouldn't call it a shortened procedure," she said.

She noted that the MAP was a mechanism, allowing a Member State to meet the compatibility requirements, and if a State already meets all the requirements, the Membership Action Plan becomes unnecessary.

"Therefore, neither Ukraine nor any other country should receive a Membership Action Plan and implement it if you meet most of the requirements," said Kristina Kvien.

The decision of the NATO Summit in Brussels in June 2021 confirmed the decision of the Bucharest Summit in 2008 that Ukraine would become a member of the Alliance in the future through the Membership Action Plan.
