Ukrainian fleet welcomes new "Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi" corvette with launching ceremony in Istanbul

On August 1, a significant event occurred at the STM shipyard in Istanbul: the second Ada-class corvette being built for Ukraine, named "Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi", was successfully launched.

As noted in the publication, the ceremony was marked by a high level of secrecy, to comply with security measures, the event details were not disclosed.
Some of the distinguished guests at the event included:
- First Lady Olena Zelenska;
- Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov;
- Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Naval Forces Oleksii Neizhpapa.

"Today is a special day for the corvette and everyone involved, comparable to a person's birthday because we are launching it. Just like two years ago, when "Hetman Ivan Mazepa" was launched, I have the honor to take part in the ceremony at the invitation of the leadership of the Navy of Ukraine.
A powerful ship will guarantee the security of the entire region, the common sea of our countries. Ukraine defends not only itself but also the very principle of peaceful coexistence for all," the first lady emphasized.

Zelenska added that according to the maritime tradition, the ship itself should be addressed on this day as a person, with wishes and instructions for a long and successful life.
"So, "Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky", I wish you a long successful life! Be stable and reliable in protecting the people who entrusted you with their lives. Carry and embody the best of both countries – Türkiye and Ukraine – in defense of justice and peace," the president's wife summed up .

The corvette "Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi" was commissioned on August 18, 2023, and within a year, Turkish ships were able to launch it. However, the vessel still requires some additional time before it is completed and ready to sail.
The new corvette was named according to President Volodymyr Zelensky's decree from March 2023 in order to uphold the historical customs of the national army and honor the legacy of Ivan Vyhovskyi, an esteemed Ukrainian hetman of the Zaporizhzhia Sich Army.
In 2021, Ukraine ordered Ada-class corvettes from Türkiye . The first corvette, "Hetman Ivan Mazepa", was launched in 2022, and "Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi" is the second ship of this type to join the Ukrainian fleet.
At the beginning of July, the warship "Hetman Ivan Mazepa" underwent sea trials.
The frigate "Hetman Sahaidachnyi" will be replaced by "Hetman Ivan Mazepa." During the full-scale war, "Sahaidachnyi" was unable to join in defending against the aggression and was sunk to prevent it from falling into the hands of the enemy.
