Trains of the future and accessibility: where's the Kyiv metro going? Conversation with Natalka Makohon
When will the new stations be opened, how will the old ones be modernized, and what will the trains of the future look like in the metro? We asked the Kyiv metro and saw with our own eyes a visualization map of the metro's wishes.
Metro is constantly being updated: new clocks appear at stations, cars are modernized, new turnstiles are installed… What will happen to the metro in 10 years? We discussed it with the "face" of the Kyiv Metro, a person who knows all or almost everything about the metro and is aware of all plans for the future, the deputy head of the Kyiv Metro Natalka Makohon.
Accessibility of stations, car upgrades, and a "pilot project" with modern trains
– What current work is being done in the metro? What is a metro routine like?
The metro is underground, so we're constantly dealing with the elimination of wet spots, leaks, replacement of rails, sleepers, lighting. This work isn't going anywhere, it's always with us. We form statistics daily on how many passengers we've transported. The information is summarized, and we see what trends are created, and depending on it, we form the train schedule. Now every day, give or take, we carry about a million passengers. Before the quarantine, it was one and a half, and in general, the metro's current infrastructure is designed for 2 million passengers daily.
