The EU has issued the fifth package of sanctions against Russia, which includes a coal embargo

Following an agreement Thursday, the European Union issued the fifth package of sanctions, which includes a coal embargo that will take effect in August, as well as the closure of ports for Russian ships with several exceptions.

The EU Council reported this.

In total, the package consists of six parts:

from August 2022, a ban on the purchase, import, or transport of coal and other solid fossil fuels in the EU if they originate in russia or are exported from russia. Coal imports to the EU now amount to 8 billion euros a year.

To recap, coal is the smallest part of the EU's energy imports from Russia. At the same time, several countries, including Germany, are blocking decisions on the gas and oil embargo.
