Rebuilding Ukraine: Sweden allocates over €43 mln to bolster energy and heating in Ukraine

The Swedish government has approved an extra SEK 500 million (about EUR 43.9 million) to help Ukraine with its heating and electricity needs.

The country's government announced this.

Thanks to these funds, it will be possible to ensure the installation of two gas turbines for electricity production. The production complex will be guarded to minimize the consequences of Russian attacks.

The Swedish Agency for International Development and Cooperation, Ukraine, and other international financial institutions are managing this project. The modern production enterprise should be operational by 2025.

According to World Bank estimates, this support could help generate electricity for 185,000 people, making it Sweden's most significant contribution to Ukraine's energy supply.

The government noted that the new aid is aimed at meeting the needs of the most vulnerable segments of the population and will be provided in parallel with what Sweden already provides for the Ukrainian energy sector.

"This SEK 500 million will be one of Sweden's largest contributions to Ukraine's energy supply and will help generate electricity for hospitals and thousands of Ukrainian homes," said Energy, Business and Industry Minister Ebba Busch.

For reference:

It should be noted that in the spring of 2024, Russian troops resumed shelling of Ukraine's energy sector. As a result of large-scale attacks, generating facilities were seriously damaged, in particular, several Ukrainian TPPs.

The occupiers continued shelling throughout the summer. One of the largest combined strikes took place on August 26.

Energy infrastructure facilities in 15 regions of Ukraine were attacked. Due to significant damage, blackouts began to be introduced again in Ukraine.

Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, the former head of Ukrenergo, suggests that lighting issues could occur during Ukraine's winter season. He believes that power outages can be prevented during milder winter conditions, but limitations will inevitably arise during harsh cold temperatures.

At the same time, Kudrytskyi emphasized that no one knows what winter's electricity supply regime will be.

According to Zelensky, the protection of Ukraine's energy facilities is being developed at various levels. He emphasized the significance of keeping the defense strategy confidential from the enemy. The President remarked that he "does not like energy PR" and will prevent the enemy from learning about its targeted areas.

It is worth mentioning that Ukrenergo and "Kyiv Digital" have launched a service to inform about the state of the power system and power outages.
