United to win: Denmark grants funding for production of Ukrainian self-propelled howitzer "Bohdana"
Denmark has offered to fund the production of Ukrainian 2C22 "Bohdana" self-propelled artillery systems. The first batch of 18 will be delivered to the Defense Forces' needs in the upcoming months.
Danish Ministry of Defense reported that.
What is the problem?
Amidst the intensity of a full-scale war, Ukraine's military is at a disadvantage in terms of equipment when compared to well-equipped Russian troops, though not necessarily with the most up-to-date weaponry.
It should be noted that in 2024, Ukraine has 6 billion dollars to purchase weapons, particularly from domestic manufacturers. However, these funds are not enough since Ukraine's production capacity is three times larger than this budget.
What is the solution?
Such a decision is the first in history, which is expected to become a precedent for other countries. This is what Ukraine has been asking its partners for in recent months.
How does it work?
It is noted that assistance in the production of self-propelled artillery units 2С22 "Bohdana" is based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Ministry of Strategic Industries.
The head of the Danish Ministry of Defense, Troels Lund Poulsen, emphasized that such agreements have obvious logistical advantages and contribute to the development of the defense industry in Ukraine.
"I hope that more countries will follow the Danish model of purchases in Ukraine. The opportunities of Ukrainians to produce equipment are greater than the funding they have now," the head of the Danish department said.
The first 18 self-propelled guns will already arrive for the needs of the Defense Forces in the coming months.
For reference:
The "Bohdana" self-propelled howitzer is a Ukrainian military vehicle equipped with a 155-mm artillery system. It has been in development since at least 2018 and is the first of its kind in Ukraine to meet the standard 155 mm caliber used by NATO countries.
The self-propelled howitzer is made using the KrAZ chassis and has a paired armored cabin for a crew of five. It features an automated guidance system with Siemens controllers and a 6-ammunition automatic feeding system. Loading, aiming, and firing can be controlled from either the cockpit or from outside.

While the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine was already underway, the Ukrainian military was given the prototype. It has been reported that the howitzer is currently being utilized on the front lines to combat Russian aggression.
It was the "Bohdana" self-propelled gun that worked on the captured Zmiiniy Island [Snake Island – ed.] and played an important role in its liberation from the Russian garrison.
According to public information, the Ukrainian troops only have seven of them in use, and those are alongside non-standard models.
As previously mentioned, the Ministry of Defense funded the development of domestic artillery systems last spring. This means that Ukrainian artillery will be partnering with Western tanks on the front lines.
Moreover, Ukraine and the Slovak defense company Konštrukta Defense have agreed to collaborate on developing a brand-new howitzer. This innovative project will be built around the Slovak self-propelled gun Zuzana.
