Ukraine's reintegration ministry starts all-out reconstruction of war-battered Yahidne in the Chernihiv region

Ukraine's Ministry of Infrastructure has started repairing more than 20 houses in the village of Yahidne in the Chernihiv region as part of a pilot project for comprehensive reconstruction.
What is the problem?
During the hostilities in Yahidne, located 15 km from Chernihiv, 101 private houses and 17 apartment buildings (74 apartments) were destroyed or damaged. After the liberation, volunteers and international aid carried out urgent repairs so people could return to their homes. Now, 350 villagers have returned home.
In March 2022, Russian troops forcibly kept 366 people in the basement of a school for 28 days as human shields. Then, 11 people, mostly elderly, died of suffocation.

What is the solution?
In 2023, Yahidne was included in the list of affected settlements that are being restored as part of a pilot project for comprehensive reconstruction.
The main goal of this project is not only to restore everything that has been destroyed but also to create a new architectural space in a single style. Some of the houses will be modernized by replacing roofs, windows, front doors, and insulating them.

How does it work?
In the center of the village, a new cultural center with a bomb shelter will be built to replace the destroyed house of culture. The school, where Russian troops set up their headquarters during the occupation and held nearly 370 residents, including 70 children, in the basement, will be turned into a memorial.
The ministry plans to complete the main reconstruction work by the end of 2024.

Yahidne is one of six settlements in five regions of Ukraine where the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure will implement a pilot project for comprehensive restoration in 2023-2025.
