Kharkiv region installs 65 modular shelters to cover citizens during shelling

Kharkiv authorities report the installation of 11 shelters out of 65 modular structures in crowded places all over the region.

The project aims to install more mobile covers to hide people from active Russian shelling.

What is the problem?

Russian troops are increasingly shelling the Kharkiv region as they aim to regain the territories lost during last year's counteroffensive by the Ukrainian army.

The region borders Russia, so shells and missiles can reach it in minutes. Residents have no time to run and hide in unreliable shelters in homes and other institutions.

What is the solution?

Authorities plan to install 65 modular shelter facilities in the Kharkiv region.

How does it work?

The network of facilities will be located near high-rise buildings, bus stations, markets, shopping centers, administrative service centers, and other crowded places.

Each shelter costs less than $50,000. The expenses are covered by 70% from local budgets, with another 30% coming from the regional budget for 2022-2023.

Previously, Ukraine's education ministry signed a memorandum of understanding with the Zhytomyr City Council and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Ukraine to create new shelter standards.
