Night attack on Kyiv and region: 25 downed drones and damaged energy infrastructure

On the night of January 2, an air raid was announced in Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The leaders of the city and region reported on the russian drone attack and the work of Ukraine's air defense.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko and the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Oleksii Kuleba, reported this on Telegram.

"Our air defense forces are working on their targets. The main thing now is to stay calm and stay in shelters until the air raid goes off. Let's hold on!" Oleksii Kuleba, the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, said.

Subsequently, the mayor of Kyiv, Vitalii Klychko, reported on the explosions in the Desnyanskyi district of Kyiv.

"All services are at the scene. Details will be later," said the mayor of the city. Later, Vitalii Klychko announced that an injured 19-year-old man was hospitalized in the Desnyanskyi district of the capital.

After that, it became known that the attack was carried out with the help of Shahed-type kamikaze drones of Iranian production.

"It's noisy in the region and the capital. A night attack by drones. russians have launched several waves of Shahed drones. They are targeting critical infrastructure facilities.

Air defense works. It is essential to be in safe places now. I ask everyone not to relax," said Oleksii Kuleba.

As a result of the night shelling of the capital, energy infrastructure facilities were damaged. Vitalii Klychko, the capital's mayor, announced that emergency power outages have started in the city, and some heat supply facilities have been de-energized. At the same time, the capital's water supply is carried out in regular mode.

He also reported that 40 drones were heading for Kyiv at night. Fifteen drones were destroyed over neighboring regions, 3 – in the Kyiv region, and 22 drones – over the capital.

There are also casualties. "One of the victims of the russian attack on the capital on December 31 died this morning. The 46-year-old man was in intensive care in a serious condition," the mayor said.

According to Oleksiy Kuleba, there is also damage to the infrastructure in the region.

"Kyiv region repels drone attacks for the second night in a row; it's another act of terrorism by the russian federation.

As a result of the strikes, critical infrastructure and private houses were damaged in the region.

There are no victims so far.

All services are on-site. We are working to eliminate the consequences of a massive attack," he said.

The command of the Air Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that on the night of January 1-2, the Defense Forces of Ukraine destroyed 39 or 40 attack drones that were launched over Ukraine by russian forces, two Orlan-10 reconnaissance drones, and one Kh-59 guided air missile.

"On the night of January 1-2, 2023, the russian occupiers inflicted a massive attack with Iranian-made Shahed-131/136 kamikaze drones. As a result of the combat work, the air defense of Ukraine's Air Force, in cooperation with the anti-aircraft defense of other components of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, all 39 attack UAVs were destroyed," the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.

Anti-aircraft missile units, Air Force fighter aircraft, and mobile fire groups were involved in repelling the attack.

Equipment and weapons provided to Ukraine by Western partners are increasingly involved, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said.

In addition, the sky defenders destroyed two Orlan-10 operational-tactical UAVs and a Kh-59 guided air missile.
