Ukraine will join EU roaming zone

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Ukraine would join the roaming zone of the European Union

She announced this during her State of the Union annual address in the European Parliament, the EP correspondent reports,

"We will introduce Ukraine into our European free roaming zone. It's time to do it," she said

After the Ukraine-EU Association Council meeting on September 5, the European Union emphasized its commitment to exploring the possibilities for a long-term agreement on abolishing roaming charges between the EU and Ukraine.

On July 24, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine plans to join the EU roaming space soon.

In April, mobile communication operators from EU countries and Ukraine signed a joint statement, certifying their intention to cooperate to ensure affordable or even free roaming between the European Union and Ukraine.

EC representative Katarína Mathernov noted that this could be one of the first foundations for a future agreement on roaming between Ukraine and the EU.

As reported by Rubryka, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will arrive in the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, on September 14 for negotiations with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

She also announced this during the annual address.

In her speech, von der Leyen listed the steps and plans for further rapprochement between Ukraine and the EU.

"We have already suspended import duties on Ukrainian exports. We will accept Ukraine into our free European roaming network, and it's time to do that.

Our 'solidarity lines' are a great success. And based on all this, the commission will work with Ukraine to go even further and to ensure Ukraine's uninterrupted access to the EU single market.

Our single market is one of the biggest success stories, and it's time to make it a success story for our Ukrainian friends.

That is why today I am going to Kyiv to discuss all this with President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and to show him that the single market has potential for the future of Ukraine as well," von der Leyen said.
