Recovery solutions: Lviv opens practical training center for construction workers
A practical training center has opened at the Lviv Higher Vocational School of Computer Technologies and Construction.
According to the Lviv Regional State Administration, builders of various specialties will be trained there, Rubryka reports.
What's the problem?
Experts estimate that the Ukrainian construction market will need up to 1.5 million workers after the war.
"If we use the terminology of our time, then we will need an army of builders. Given the state of our industry today, we will need to train at least 500,000 construction industry professionals," said Ivan Nazarenko, President of the Academy of Construction of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences. "Education is the powerful engine of future recovery that will allow us to start this process as quickly as possible."
He added that the construction industry currently faces a huge shortage of workers, especially in engineering and construction specialties. It is reasonable to focus on training these specialists in educational institutions, especially since Ukrainian schools have been experiencing a noticeable increase in demand for such specialties among applicants over the past year.
However, until active hostilities end and experts assess the destroyed infrastructure, the Ukrainian authorities won't know the final extent of these ruins, so it is early to talk about specific figures for the labor shortage in the construction market.
What's the solution?
A practical training center for builders will educate and train specialists in different construction fields.
"At this center, we have combined specialties from the entire construction sector. Here, you can acquire such occupations as bricklayer, plasterer, tile layer, gypsum board installer, and others. We understand that after the victory, Ukraine will need to be rebuilt. To do this skillfully, we need centers like this to train professionals," said Maria Polishchuk, the school's director.
How does it work?
Specialists in the construction industry can obtain qualifications and retrain here, while vocational education teachers can undergo internships. The institution offers short-term retraining courses for displaced Ukrainians.
The center will also serve as a co-working platform for social partnership and cooperation with international partners.
"Thanks to this educational and practical center, vocational school students will be fully formed, erudite, ready-to-work professionals," said Ivan Pykus, Head of the Department of Innovation of the Education and Science Department at the Lviv Regional State Administration. "In this situation, the employer's role is very important. They also become partners, purchasing or sharing equipment or construction mixtures and materials. Employers will not need to retrain specialists at their production facilities, as similar practical centers will provide all the necessary knowledge for further employment."
The cost of the project is ₴2.8 million. Within the "Education Development Program in Lviv Region," ₴1.5 million was allocated from the regional budget's fund for equipment purchase, and ₴180,000 was provided from the local budget.
With funds from the institution's social fund, windows were replaced, the electrical network was updated, and the roof underwent maintenance.
In related news, a free express school for builders has opened in Kharkiv. It teaches those who want to acquire new skills and help restore houses affected by Russian shelling. The school has already graduated five specialists and is preparing for a new enrollment.
As reported, over 250,000 people will benefit from initiatives to restore and enhance social resilience in Ukraine.
