Zelensky meets with EU Parliament president to discuss cooperation

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, met with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, as part of a working trip in Lviv.
The press service of the Office of the President of Ukraine informs that the head of the European Parliament is visiting our country for the second time since the beginning of the full-scale war of the russian federation.
Zelensky thanked the President of the European Parliament for her leadership in supporting Ukraine since the first days of the terrible war and for the critical decisions made by this European institution.

In particular, Zelensky recalled that on the second day after submitting an application for membership in the European Union in March 2022, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the support and need to grant Ukraine candidate status.
The President of Ukraine also noted the resolutions adopted by the European Parliament regarding:
- resolution on recognition of russia as a state sponsor of terrorism,
- resolution on recognition of the Holodomor of 1932–1933 in Ukraine as genocide of the Ukrainian people,
- resolution on the creation of an international ad hoc tribunal regarding the crime of aggression against Ukraine,
- resolution on the preparation of the Ukraine-EU summit (with the support of the peace formula),
- resolution dedicated to the anniversary of the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the russian federation, which, in particular, contains a call to provide Ukraine with the necessary weapons.
Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Roberta Metsola for her firm position on the need to increase sanction pressure on the russian federation. He noted that the 10th sanctions package was extremely important, although there still was the need to strengthen sanction pressure on the aggressor.

The presidents of Ukraine and the European Parliament discussed the promotion of the Ukrainian peace formula and the prospects of involving a wide range of world players, primarily countries of the Global South, in the upcoming summit in support of peace.
Volodymyr Zelensky also emphasized that Ukraine aims to complete the implementation of the recommendations of the European Commission as soon as possible and start negotiations on joining the EU already this year.
The parties discussed the perspective of the functioning of the Liaison Office of the European Parliament in Ukraine, which will contribute to strengthening cooperation and speeding up European integration processes.
In her turn, Roberta Metsola noted that she was very glad to come to Ukraine again, in particular, to visit Lviv for the first time.
The President of the European Parliament assured of the unwavering support of Ukraine in confronting full-scale russian aggression, as Ukraine protects not only itself but also Europe. And also Metsola promised to support Ukraine on the way to membership in the European family, of which Ukraine is an integral part.
