American University Kyiv starts its first academic year
On September 1, 2022, American University Kyiv (AUK) has brought its commitment to provide a world-class education to Ukrainian students to fruition as students were enrolled in five inaugural degree programs, including a bachelor of science in Business Administration, a bachelor and master of science in Global Management and a bachelor and master of science in Software Engineering.
AUK is the first university in Ukraine designed as an innovative world-class institution with its foundation fully based on U.S. higher education standards. In 2022 AUK enrolled 152 students. 20% of bachelor students passed NMT test with over 190 points. All AUK students are highly proficient in English language.
In Fall, 2022 the programs are being offered online due to the war in Ukraine through the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). It is an open-source, cloud-based platform for online learning and teaching which is #1 in higher education in the U.S. Canvas provides AUK students the benefit of pursuing their education from anywhere in the world. Given the challenging times in Ukraine, this is an important benefit to Ukrainians, especially those who have had to move abroad because of the war. As soon as it is completely safe, AUK plans to initiate in-person classes on its flagship Kyiv RiverPort campus.
"We are happy AUK has finally began preparing the future professional leaders who will rebuild Ukraine and turn it into an undeniable regional leader". Said Dr. Rick Shangraw, AUK Founding president. "We are looking forward to starting our onsite classes. However, given the current situation in Ukraine, we believe this was the safest and most effective way to begin providing a quality education for our students."
AUK admission process required that applicants met all Ukrainian state requirements and demonstrated high-leadership potential. Students participated in virtual presentations and submitted essays and video addresses to show their interest and commitment to the program, similarly to the general admissions process in the American higher education system.
"We were highly impressed with the caliber of AUK's applicants, as well as their commitment to learn, innovate, and make a positive impact in Ukraine." Said Dr. Roman Sheremeta, AUK Founding Rector. "We are glad that could combine Ukrainian and American standards of admission to deeply evaluate each applicant."
All AUK admitted students of Fall 2022 received guaranteed wartime scholarships, which covered 75% of their undergraduate costs for two academic years and 60% of their graduate costs for one academic year.
AUK is the first university in Ukraine to partner with ASU, the most innovative university in the U.S. according to the U.S. News & World Report, through a 25-year agreement. This partnership gives AUK access to ASU curriculum, exchange programs and unique opportunities to offer dual degrees from both AUK and ASU.
