The U. S. may provide Ukraine with long-range missile systems, media report
The United States may approve the transfer of long-range missile weapons to Ukraine in the coming days.
CNN reports, citing its sources.
The U.S. presidential administration is preparing to increase arms supplies to Ukraine, including the provision of modern long-range missile systems (MLRS). Ukraine classifies these weapons as multiple rocket launchers.
According to sources on the American T.V. channel, the U.S. may announce the decision this week.
The report notes that the Ukrainian Armed Forces currently need such weapons to counter russia's full-scale aggression.
The United States has been refusing to supply Kyiv with these systems for weeks, fearing that Ukraine could use the weapons to strike at russia, which the Americans say could lead to an increase in the "escalation" of the military conflict.
Reuters claims that the dialogue between Washington and Kyiv on this topic is "very delicate" and aimed at achieving a "common understanding of the risk of escalation."
At the same time, the United States doesn't impose clear geographical restrictions on the use of its weapons by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, Washington seeks to "reach a common understanding of the dangers of escalation."
The United States is likely to send these systems as part of a larger package of military aid to Ukraine, which could be announced next week.
According to the Ukrainian authorities, the American MLRS can "change the rules of the game." CNN notes that U.S. long-range systems can launch missiles for hundreds of kilometers (using ATACMS tactical missiles, ed.), much further than any of Ukraine's weapons.
