Cycling club members in Zhytomyr region restoring an abandoned 19th-century estate
In the village of Ivankivtsi, Novohuivynske community, Zhytomyr region, members of the cycling club are restoring the abandoned estate of Modest Yezersky, built in the Neo-Renaissance style at the end of the 19th century.
Oleksandr Onishchenko, the founder of the Dyki Saihaky cycling club, told about it, Ukrinform reports.
"Two years ago, I saw a video about the estate of Modest Yezersky on one of the Youtube channels. Then the members of our cycling club decided to go to that estate in Ivankivtsi. We arrived, and everything was ruined there. The roof was collapsing, thickets were growing around. Then we went around the area, which we have been doing for several years, and at one point it became sad that there are many objects that are being destroyed. In such places, besides destruction, you want to see something alive or save some objects from complete destruction. That's why I offered my friends to raise money for Yezersky's estate, and in September we started going there," Onyschenko said.
According to him, the members of the cycling club get to Ivankivka on bicycles. From Zhytomyr to the village, it's almost 25 km.
Since the beginning of autumn, the bushes near Yezersky's estate have been cleared, and the interior has already been cleaned in 5 rooms out of 8. Cycling activists plan to complete work on the building over the coming weekend.
In addition, they are going to repair and preserve the roof in the estate. Thus, the members of the cycling club want to save the estate from destruction.
Onishchenko added that the estate has an owner who doesn't use it. The building together with the land plot is now for sale.
The estate in Ivankivtsi was built in the Neo-Renaissance style in 1892 by the local landowner Modest Yezersky. It changed several owners, was used as a military hospital during World War II, and then housed a school and children's camp.
